Off-Road Championships Results
This year's Off-Road Championships came down to a contest between Club officials as Membership Secretary Dave Bowers (pictured left) beat Club Secretary Mandy Cook (pictured right) by just 1 point! Eight seniors and
three under 18's took part in the competition this year, which comprises
12 events, with 8 counting for points. Nine were mass starts held on circuits
in various places in the forest, combining a mixture of fire routes and
singe tracks, some were quite testing with bomb holes to negotiate. One
known as 'the rough ride' is held against the clock on a 25 mile route
from Barnham to Icklingham in a loop using parts of the Icknield Way.
With two other events again against the clock one up hill and the other
down hill.

Shippea Hill was the venue for the latest round of Mildenhall Cycling Club's Evening Time-Trial series and attracted one of the largest fields for a Club event for sometime. Fourteen riders turned out on what was a hot and fairly windy evening. Fastest rider on the night was West Suffolk Wheeler`s top time-trialist Ben Mickleburgh who stopped the watch in 22 minutes 44 seconds. His clubmate and Veteran, Brian Starr turned in a good ride to finish 22 seconds behind in second place. In third spot was Mildenhall C.C. fast man Larry Moulton finishing in 23 minutes 34 seconds. Regional Grass-Track Championships see Mildenhall lose the Team Title for first time in 20 years
Martin Kemp (Mildenhall C.C.) had a succesful days racing last Sunday riding the Regional Grass-Track Championships, organised by Team Welwyn at Hertford winning four medals. He gained first place
in the Individual Pursuit, finishing 3 seconds up on the second placed
rider (Simon Layford) to take the gold medal. Kemp, then rode the 400m
Scratch race and finished second to take the silver medal. Clumate, Keith
Richardson finished in 3rd to take the bronze medal. In the next event,
the 800m Scratch, Kemp took another bronze medal, as he did in the 8km
Scratch event. Afterwards Kemp said "Unfortunately we weren't able to defend the team pursuit, which we'd held for 20 years or so, because we only had two Mildenhall team members. Similarly the team sprint. Sadly Team Welwyn won both." He added "The weather was marvellous, sunny all the time. It was a great track, run round a 400m running track. Quite smooth but a bit of a headwind coming into the home straight. It made it interesting for the team sprint (run over 3x200m) because some teams ended up having two tail wind runs, whilst others had two headwind runs. However, the spirit was friendly so there were no major complaints. Team Welwyn organised the event and it all went smoothly." |

made possible by generous support from the Bury Free Press, Bussens &
Parkin, Computer Scene and Gipping Press. Each lap at the top of Ousden Hill there was a Prime (a prize for the fastest rider in each section to the top of the hill from the start). minutes 54 seconds. All the remaining riders being somewhat over weight
and unfit followed in dribs and drabs. Second place rider was veteran
Adrian Turner in a time of 26 minutes 17 seconds. Barry Archer, after

Elmy rider wins Mildenhall's Cyclo-Cross and the 2002/03 Eastern League
Russell Parkins finished the Cyclo-Cross season in convincing style with victory in Mildenhall Cycling Club's event on Sunday, underlining his supremacy in the EDP Ivan Jeckell Eastern Cyclo-Cross League. The Ipswich based Elmy Cycles racing team rider was the clear winner in the main race of the day, which was for Seniors, Juniors, Veterans and Women. However, Parkins didn't have it all his own way after suffering an uncharacteristic slow start which left him the back of the pack. It took Parkins nearly a lap of the nine-lap race to fight his way to front of the race, before stamping his superiority on the field. He then rode away for another convincing win which has resulted in him winning the seniors category of the League for a second successive year with 7 wins and 4 runner-up positions in the 16 rounds. His nearest challenger was Nathan Miller riding for Ipswich Bicycle Club, finishing 2 minutes 28 seconds down with Newmarket based Nick Ainsworth riding for James Hay Racing Team finishing a further 47 seconds behind in third. This was the final race of the 2002/3 Eastern Cyclo-Cross League and took place at West Stow Country Park. The Mildenhall Cycling Club promotion used a 1½ mile circuit using the Park's paths and fields which provided a tough course for the competitors who had travelled from all over the eastern counties. The organising club was well represented in the race, with event organiser Ian Poole continuing his recent good form to be the best Mildenhall rider in 15th place. Club Cyclo-Cross Champion Keith Richardson finished over 5 minutes further back in 18th followed by Simon Larbey in 19th and Mandy Cook finishing in 21st place to take the first ladies prize. In the supporting races, Claire Larbey took the first Youth Girl prize in the Youth (under 16's) race and Matthew Cook took his second consecutive victory in the Under 12's race. The Final 2002/03 Eastern Cyclo-Cross league positions for Mildenhall riders were Keith Richardson (Seniors: 17th); Ian Poole (Veterans: 5th); Mandy Cook (Women: 1st); Claire Larbey (Youth: 12th); Matthew Cook (Under 12's: 2nd), while in the team category Mildenhall were fourth. Mildenhall to promote the final round of the Eastern Cyclo-Cross League
On Sunday Mildenhall Cycling Club promote the final round of the 2002/3 Ivan Jeckell Eastern Cyclo-Cross league at West Stow Country Park, near Bury St Edmunds. The organiser Ian Poole is expecting "there to be some close racing as riders from all over the eastern counties battle for the League prizes and medals". "Although many of the competitions are already settled, one of the main battles with local interest will be for the Silver medal in the Under 12's race. Mildenhall's Matthew Cook secured a win at the Team Clean race at Foxhall Stadium, Ipswich on Sunday to open up a 10-point gap over Luke Newby from Diss. However, Cook must finish on Sunday to secure the silver medal" added Poole. In other classes, Matthew's mother Mandy has already secured the gold medal in the Women's class for the Mildenhall club after consistently finishing in the minimum 10 counting events since the beginning of September and despite only finishing second in Sunday's race. In the Veterans section, Poole had his best race of his season on Sunday to take the points for 4th place and move him up to 5th overall. He says "I will need a repeat performance at West Stow to hold on to what will be my best finish since returning to this element of the sport 3 years ago". The Mildenhall club
also expects to be represented by Club Champion Keith Richardson in the
senior class, Claire Larbey in the youth event and, possibly, her father
Simon in the veterans category. First race is at 11.15 with the Under
12's race at 12 noon and open to anyone. The main race for Seniors, Juniors,
Veterans and Women starts at 1.00pm, lasting for 1 hour. |

Year of celebrations planned as Mildenhall Cycling Club are 50 years old in 2003
Mildenhall Cycling Club have confirmed the details of the events planned to celebrate their Golden Jubilee with a Reunion in June the highlight of a packed year. "The town's Riverside
Hotel has been booked on Sunday 8th June 2003 for the exclusive use of
our current as well as ex-members to exchange and reminisce about their
cycling experiences. We also plan to display photographs charting the
Club's history as well as a collection of the Club colours and jersey's
used over the years" outlined Club spokesman Mark Burchett. During the Club's first fifty years there have been nearly 340 people who at some point have been members. The current members, led by founding member and now a Vice-President Alan Thompson from West Row, have had a fantastic response in their search to contact the ex-members, including Donny Clarke who has been tracked down to Western Australia and who has already booked his hotel for the reunion. The Club have also been helped by publicity from the media with notable successes including Doug Ward from Chard, Somerset who responded to a feature in Cycling Weekly and Dave Baldock from Lowestoft (BBC Radio Suffolk), while Wally Allsop from Luton and Titch Powell from Isleham were both reunited with the Club after reading the Bury Free Press. As well as the reunion,
the Club is also aiming to get as many members as possible to ride one
of the Charity rides held locally. The Club's annual Mildenhall Cycling
Rally will host the National 8km Grass-Track Championships and the organisers
are looking at holding other events to mark the Club's special year. There will be the
Half-Century Charity Ride on Sunday 21st September offering cyclists of
all ages and abilities the choice of either an off-road 50km or 25km on-road
routes. This event will be run by the organisers of the very successful
Bury Bike Ride, with all the monies raised going to their chosen charities.
(SGR Operation Santa, MacMillian Nurses and East Anglian Children's Hospice
- EACH). The Club is currently
working on a booklet chronicling the Club's history, which is expected
to be published after Easter. Although next month's Annual Dinner and
Prize Presentation (8th February) will be rewarding members for their
efforts during the 2002 season, it will get the 50th year off in style. There are still nearly
a hundred ex-members to trace and anyone that hasn't been written to by
the Club, can contact Alan Thompson on 01638 713556 for further details
of the Golden Jubilee events, including the reunion. Details of all the
events planned to mark the Club's 50th year will soon be available on
the Club's website at http://www.mildenhallcc.org.uk, where there will
also be an email link to register your interest in the Reunion. |
