Off-Road Championship - Final Rounds (11 & 12)

The final two rounds of Mildenhall Cycling Club's Off-Road Championship were both held on the same day at Emily's Wood in Thetford Forest.

Despite Matthew Mantle winning both rounds leading from start to finish in the senior section, he couldn't deny Pete Clements from winning the year-long competition. Of the twelve rounds Matthew had only ridden 7, while Pete had completed 9 with the his best eight rounds counting towards the final score.

Matthew's wife Diane and son Colin both went one better winning the Ladies and Junior sections resepectively. They sealed their wins by winning both of the last two rounds to ensure they recorded 79 and 70 points respectively, from an available maximum 80 points.

The Mantles weren't only family competing. Existing members, the Robb family with David & Judith and their sons Alexander & Francis all competed in the Off-Road Championship series, were joined by the Carter family of Phil & Kat and sons Joslin & Oliver, who joined this summer.

The presentations to the winners will take place at the Club's Annual Lunch and Prize Presentation for 2015 which will take place in February next year.

Mark Cox (Cambridge CC) was the fastest in Sunday's joint Hill Climb Championship held by Ely & District and Mildenhall Cycling Clubs.

He stopped the clock at 2 minutes and 26 seconds, just four seconds quicker than Nik Banks and John McAndrew, both from Ely & District CC. Tom Sykes was the third fastest up Primrose Hill, Moulton for the Ely Club in a time of 2m 33s.

The fastest Mildenhall rider was Zak Towler, who was the seventh quickest up the hill with a time of 2m 48s. Just three seconds behind him were club-mates Pete Clements and Marc Bowers.

Mildenhall Members compete in Tour of Cambridgeshire

The weekend of 6th and 7th June saw a new event on the UK calendar, the Tour of Cambridgeshire.

The events formed part of the UCI World Cycling Tour, a series of sanctioned events held all over the world that act as qualifiers for the Masters and Amateurs world championships. Unusually for road events in the UK, the events were held on closed roads, with the starting point each day being the Peterborough Showground which made for an excellent headquarters.

On the Saturday was a time trial, held over a challenging 16 mile course which was hillier than expected and, coupled with a bracing wind made it a challenging day. The organisers showed great attention to detail, the start being held inside the arena which attracted good crowds, a Tour de France style starting ramp and a dedicated warm up area with turbo trainers for the riders. Adjacent to this was an Expo which helped to build the atmosphere. The clubs sole representative was Richard Carrington, participating in the 40-44 masters age group. Richard was disappointed with his performance on the day, finishing in a time of 41 minutes and 45 seconds, placing him in 38th position in his age group.

The next morning, a healthy contingent from the Mildenhall Club including Paul Pearson, Marc Bowers, Jamie French and, Paul Flack joined Carrington on the start line for the Gran Fondo, a mass participation event with chip timing held on a sporting 82 mile course. It was a day of mixed fortunes for club riders; Marc Bowers experienced mechanical issues which he was able to overcome and finish in a credible time of 3hours 59minutes. Paul Pearson completed his longest ride to date, having recently been out of action due to injury. Richard Carrington was fortunate to gain a good starting position and despite a scare in the early stages where he narrowly avoided a large crash he finished in a time of 3hours 22minutes which placed him 41st in his age group and 232nd overall out of 4787 finishers. Carrington's time placed him well inside the top 25% of finishers in his age group, qualifying him for the world final event to be held in Denmark later in the year.

Following the event, he inspected the rear wheel of his racing machine, to check the tyre following his emergency stop to avoid the crash. The tyre had a bald patch, approximately 7cms long…..the result could have been very different .....

Mantle family compete in Norfolk Summer Cyclo-Cross Series

The Mantle family took part in the second round of the Norfolk Summer Cyclocross Series on 19th April.

ColinIn the organisers' words, the aim of the series is to introduce new riders to the sport, as well as giving experienced riders something to do in the summer!  The race entries are small which encourages a more friendly atmosphere and results in less 'traffic' as well as more fun than the larger series events.

It was held at Eccles Hall School near Snetterton.  The venue has been used in years gone by for CX races & consists of flat woodland with plenty of dips & bumps for excitement!

The course was mostly the same as that used for the 5by3 MTB race earlier in January, but with the addition of two large logs to 'encourage' dismounting.

Colin raced first (pictured right).  He has moved up to the Juvenile (13-14) category this year which is probably the biggest jump to be made - here he raced with the Youth riders (15-16) on the full course, in this case for 30 minutes.

He rode steadily to finish in a strong 8th place only 13 seconds away from 7th.

DianeDiane (pictured left) raced in the 40 minute women's & Vet50+ men's race.  She nearly didn't ride after a morning of fighting hayfever, but her head & eyes cleared, her race face appeared & she rode hard!  She was amazed to finish 2nd lady & first Vet lady!

Matthew raced in the 1 hour men's race, including Vets( (fast), Seniors (faster) & Juniors (often fastest!).  The winner was a young senior followed by an experienced MTB rider, both of whom were skilled enough the hop the logs every lap without dismounting - very impressive!  Matthew finished 9th overall & 5th Vet.

Full details of the series are on the website, with a video showing the expert log-hoppers here.

Thanks to Matthew Mantle for the words and pictures.
