2017 Hill Climb Championship

Dan Sutton of Mildenhall Cycling ClubJust 21 seconds separated the Mildenhall Cycling Club members competing in their annual Hill Climb Championship on Primrose Hill in Moulton on Sunday.

Dan Sutton (pictured right at the start) riding in his first Club Hill Climb, roared up the 930yard hill in 2 minutes 19.9 seconds and will be crowned as Mildenhall’s Hill Climb Champion at their Prize Presentation next February.

David Robb (48) was the first rider of the day up the hill and set the tone for the remaining cyclists with a respectable time of 2 minutes 41.5 seconds. The very next rider off, one minute behind him was his eldest son 15-year-old Alex. The schoolboy excelled himself shaving over ten seconds off his time recorded in the 2016 Hill Climb to stop the clock at 2 minutes 38.1 seconds and the satisfaction of beating his Dad by three seconds!

Having ridden out to Moulton from their Exning home, competed in the Hill Climb, they then cycled to Cambridge to watch Alex ’s 12-year-old brother Francis playing Rugby!

Pete Clements was the next Mildenhall rider off up the hill and Mr Consistency rode to within a second of the time he achieved in last year’s event, going past time keeper Mike Wiseman in 1minute 27.4seconds. Like the Robb’s he had ridden out to the event from his home in Weeting, taking part in the Club ride out from Mildenhall on his way and it was good to see the club’s colours at the start and on the hill cheering on their club-mates.

Clements was the fastest Mildenhall rider on the road, that was until 22-year-old Sutton began his ascent of Primrose Hill, beating his time by seven seconds.

The fastest rider of the day was Nik Banks (Ely & District CC) who did it in 1m 52.4s, while the only other rider to break the two-minute barrier was James Ward 1m 55.1s

The event was held jointly with Ely & District Cycling Club and compared to recent years was held in near perfect conditions with the hedges lining the hill, protecting the riders from the cool autumnal air.

Matthew Skeats was the fastest Mildenhall rider over the 5-mile Fordham course in a time of 12 minutes and 56 seconds, although the quickest rider on the night was Jordan Black from neighbouring Newmarket Cycling & Triathlon Club, who stopped the clock at 12m 23s.

Evening Time-Trial Series - Round 5

Held on the Red Lodge circuit for the fifth round of Mildenhall Cycling Club's time-trial series. It was a near perfect evening and that was borne out by the much larger number of riders out competing!

The top two positions within Club members were contested yet again between Matt Skeats and Dan Sutton. It was the former that got the better of his good friend and although he recorded a Personal Best time of 22minutes 59seconds, it was three seconds slower than Mr Sutton had set in the last round on this course!

The fastest rider of the night by far though, was Max Sahota who lives in nearby Kennet but now rides for Team Botrill. His winning time of 19minutes 49seconds saw him record an average speed of just over 28mph!

Evening Time-Trial Series - Round 1

Mildenhall Cycling Club's first time-trial of the season took place on the Fordham 5-mile circuit and unusually for that course there was no fenland blow to greet the riders on the drag back into Fordham from Isleham.

Amazingly, having ridden out to the event from Mildenhall, good friends Matt Skeats and Dan Sutton, then proceeded to finish within just one second of each other, in that order.

Annual Rough Ride

Matt Skeats was the clear winner of Mildenhall Cycling Club's annual Rough Ride on Sunday, finishing over six minutes ahead of his closest rival, Matthew Mantle.

The 23-year-old stormed off from the start of the 5.2 mile circuit, leaving the rest of the field in his wake. By the end of the first of the four lap event Mantle was already trailing him by nearly two minutes, with his younger brother Ryan leading the chasing pack nearly a further minute back. Averaging an impressive 16.2mph over the fire routes and tracks at Emily's Wood in Thetford Forest, Matt continued to build up his unassailable lead ahead of Mantle and barring mechanical failure they were both assured of the top two positions early on.

Behind them there was a real tussle for third, with four riders (Dan Sutton, Pete Clements, David Robb and Ryan Skeats) neck and neck at the end of the second lap. By the end of the penultimate lap Robb had slipped back and during the final lap even Clements could no longer keep up with the younger Ryan Skeats (20) and Sutton (22)! Despite having raced over 20 leg sapping miles they still had the energy to sprint up the long drag up to the finishing line, to produce a thrilling burst for the line with Sutton just beating his friend by one second!

While Matt and Ryan were racing at the sharp end, their Mum Karen and Dad Martin took it more leisurely. But after Karen stopped having completed two laps, Skeats senior then followed his eldest sons example and produced a super ride to overhaul some of the riders in front of him to claim seventh place!

Fourteen-year-old Colin Mantle might have been the sole competitor in the Under 18 category, made it all the more impressive as he averaged over 10mph to complete the 10.4 miles in 1 hour 1 minute 24 seconds!

Mildenhall Cycling Club members just before the start of the 2017 Rough Ride. The winner Matt Skeats is second right.

Disaster for Mildenhall rider in MSG's First Round

Three Club riders made the long Journey to London for round one of the Mud, Sweat & Gears series. The course, around the outside of the velodrome in the Olympic park, is fairly fast but suffers from a lack of places to over take so traffic can be a problem during the races. The A lines need to be used to overtake slower riders.

While David Robb and Alexander Robb both had a successful race in the morning, Matthew Skeats had a disaster in the afternoon. Full of enthusiasm to achieve a good placing in the first race which would ensure a good gridding position for later races it was not to be his day. During the testing lap he managed to take a poor line over some rocks and clobber his rear mech and with that his race was over.An expensive day out!

In the morning races Robb senior was on the second row of the grid - a first for him. After a good defence of his position he managed to come in seventeenth, even beating two other riders in a three up sprint for the line (pictured left) His best result yet!

A steady ride for Alexander (pictured right) gave him nineteenth place, giving him a target to improve upon next time.

We expect more local riders to be out next time as it is our local round in Kennet near Newmarket.
