Pete Clements was the fastest up Primrose Hill in Moulton on Sunday for Mildenhall Cycling Club in their Annual Hill Climb Championship.

The thirty seven year old completed the near 1000 yard hill in 2 minutes and 22.04 seconds, nearly 17 seconds quicker than one-time record holder Max Pendleton. The father of ex-World and Olympic Champion Victoria Pendleton, was disappointed that his time was over a minute slower than his record breaking ride, but he did concede that that was 40 years ago!

Juniors Ryan Skeats and Adam Gough both raced up the hill quicker than Pendleton, recording times 2 minutes 31.34 seconds and 2 minutes 36.38 seconds.

Held jointly with Ely & District CC in near perfect conditions the event attracted 26 riders from the two clubs. The fastest rider was Ely's Kieran Brady who broke the two-minute barrier in a super quick time of 1 minute 54.95 seconds.

As well those competing in the Mildenhall Club's colours, they were well supported by other members who enjoyed a club-ride out to Moulton, before returning to Mildenhall via a tea-stop. Everyone racing up the hill were appeciative of the support two particular members Marc Bowers and Richard Carrington gave them with their cowbells, which gave the event a continental feel!

Despite the forecast for severe weather, eight hardy members of Mildenhall Cycling Club turned up for the latest round of the Club's Off-Road Championship.

The event began in dry albeit very overcast conditions but as the picture below shows, by the time they had finished they were wet and took refuge from the rain!

"Today's results show a nice a turnout and some lovely weather got a fair group out and some great racing on a new course (no one thrashed me with a stick so I think its ok ) .... " said the Off-Road organiser Barry 'Sturmey' Archer.

He added "The Ladies and Under 18's racing was some of the best so far this year, with really close finishes for both events made it a great spectacle. The Under 18's were led home by Josh Murad in a sprint finish over Ryan Skeats after being close all the way from start to finish. The Ladies also finished with a sprint finish, between Diane Mantle ahead of new member Clare Johnson - they’d been close throughout all the laps as well."

Mildenhall Cycling Club began their evening time-trialling programme this week using the Fordham 5-mile circuit for the first time.

They've expanded the number of events from four to six events with the 5-mile course starting and completing the summer competiton. The fastest senior member on the night was Matt Cook recording a time of 15 minutes and 58 seconds, while the fastest Under 18 year old was Adam Gough finishing just one second ahead of Jake Towler in 14 minutes 48 seconds.

There were more members taking part in the Wiggle Spring Sportives in Newmarket, leaving depleted numbers taking part in round 3 of the Club's Off-Road Championship.

Although ironically, this made no difference at all to the winners of the three sections with Jake Towler the only Under 18 year old rider, his elder brother Jessie was the fastest Over 18 and in the Ladies, Diane Mantle was quickest again.

Matt Skeats returned home from University in York for his Easter break and cruised around the 20 mile circuit of Mildenhall Cycling Club's Annual Rough Ride in a winning time of one hour 12 minutes 44 seconds. The 20-year-old averaged nearly 17 miles per hour over a mixture of bridleways, farm tracks and some tarmac to finish well over three minutes ahead of his nearest rival, Marc Bowers. Mandy Burchett finished in third position with a comfortable gap of over three minutes ahead of Richard Carrington, although she was disappointed that her average of 14.98 was below 15mph!

Ryan Skeats was only 12 minutes slower than his older brother to easily win the Under 18's section in a time of one hour 24 minutes and 35 seconds. Josh Murad, who has only recently celebrated his thirteenth birthday and four years younger than the winner, averaged over 12 miles per hour to record a time of 1hr 38m 58s to finish second. And to his credit the teenager from Thetford also suffered a puncture and had to walk to final section of the course!

The Mildenhall Club's Chairman Mark Burchett said afterwards "One of the most pleasing aspects of this year's Rough Ride were the number of children taking part and together with their parents they made up a significant proportion of the 25 members taking part."

The Robb family from Exning consisting of Mum Judith and children 12 year-old Alexander and 9 year-old Francis completed the event in a time of 2 hours 4 minutes and 41 seconds. While the Flack family from West Row of Helen and Paul were joined by their daughters Aimee (11) and Millie (12) to finish in a time of 2 hours 12 minutes 14 seconds.

In a departure from recent annual Rough Rides, it has reverted back to it's original early season calendar spot and under the guidance of Martin Skeats held over new routes.

The first round of Mildenhall Cycling Club's Off-Road Championship took place on Sunday in Emily's Wood. Brothers Jake and Jessie Towler took the honours in the Under 18 and Over 18 categories respectively!

There are eleven more rounds in this season long competition, with the best eight rides counting towards the final positions. The next round is on Sunday 9th March 2013.
